Line Breaks
Several members have been using long lines of repeated symbols in order to create line breaks. This creates problems on the site. A line break can be made by using the html hr and /hr .
For example: Use this

not entire lines of this: ~~~ or this ---
Please, if you are using lines of more than five consecutive symbols as line breaks replace them with the proper html symbols. The allowed html on this site is as follows:
strong, em, br, blockquote, strike, font, b, i , u, center, img, a, hr, p, ul , li, ol.
Remember to always place the proper closing html tag. If you use hr for examlple it must be followed at the end by /hr. There should be a list of html symbols each time you edit a story to help you remember which ones work on this site

Thank you!

Member info. Reminder
This is just a friendly reminder. It is never a good idea to put information online that can identify you in real life. There are just too many crazy people out there who would use such things in the wrong way. Everyone please be careful and if you are under 18 be sure to check with your parents before putting any personal information on this or any other web site.

Open for Business!
You are free to log in now, post stories and resume all of your normal activities around here. Please read the post below if you've haven't already though, to avoid future problems.

I've upgraded a lot of our software so there might be bugs that I don't know about yet. If you have any problems with any part of the site, please leave me a comment here and I will get it resolved as soon as I can. Thanks!

Current Status of Things -- Please Read!
First of all, this site is in read only mode right now. This means that you are not able to login, post comments or upload stories. Browsing and reading should work fine.

I'm still working on things and ironing out a few bugs so until then, access will be limited.

I've already gotten a lot accomplished in the way of making the site more stable and secure and moving us to a better server. However, there are other issues that have been causing a lot of problems around here. I want you guys to bear in mind that I'm only one person and it's simply not possible for me to monitor everything that users submit. I've gotten so frustrated recently that I almost shut down the site permanently. But I don't think responsible members should have to miss out either and so the site is going to stay online.

I'm going to be cracking down on things around here though. I'm sorry if I seem harsh, but after spending the last 18 hours beating my brains out and trying to fix so many unnecessary issues, I can't help being frustrated. Even more so because so many of these things are avoidable if people would just follow the rules.

I'm going to make things very clear in this post and if people continue to ignore our guidelines, I'm going to start banning them outright without warning. I'm sorry, but I simply don't have time to follow after people who repeatedly violate the rules. So if anything below applies to your account, I suggest you fix the issues as soon as account access is restored.
  1. This is a fanfiction site, which means that you are permitted to post stories, essays and poetry only. You are not to use the system as a personal journal, for advertising purposes, homework help, to share chat scripts or anything else that does not qualify as fictional writing. A small authors note at the beginning of the story is fine but I don't like seeing multiple chapters devoted to what a person had for breakfast. That's not what this site is for.

  2. Again, please do not use excessive amounts of multiple characters in your words. What I mean is using 20 exclamation points and things of that nature. Not only is unnecessary but it causes a lot of problems with the code it takes to run this site. In fact, a person who recently updated used slashes to turn her summary into one extremely long word and it caused the entire layout go out of whack. I spent several hours trying to figure out what was wrong with the code before I realized what was causing it. If you must emphasize something, like the word "no", please do not use anything more than three or four extra characters.

  3. I understand that not everyone has perfect spelling and grammatical skills. But please, do not post stories that are just full of errors that you're not willing to fix and particularly, please don't use netspeak/chatspeak in your stories. To clarify, I mean things like u instead of you, ur instead of your and so forth. That's fine for instant messaging but it doesn't belong in stories. I know it takes a bit more effort, but if you do your best to correct the errors in your story and type things out so people can understand them, you'll generally get more positive reviews.

  4. Finally, please take special care when adding warnings, labels and summaries to your stories. It's important to keep things properly categorized not only so people can find them but also so that people who are offended by more graphic situations can avoid stories that contain them.

I'm interested in taking on moderators to help check over stories and make sure that the rules are being followed. You can send an e-mail to if you're interested, but I would like any potential moderators to meet the following requirements:
  • I'm only looking for people who are 18 and older at this point, due to the adult nature of many of the stories that will require moderation.

  • Please contact me only if you're serious about this responsibility. I understand if you have to take a break for any reason, but I would like people who will let me know if they're no longer able to moderate or have to take an extended break rather than just disappearing like folks have in the past.

Thanks a bunch and I will have the site fully restored as soon as possible!

Happy Holidays/Beta Readers!
First and foremost, I wanted to wish all of you a very safe and happy holiday season!

Also, many of you have expressed interest in either finding or offering your services as a beta reader. Since the forums are down indefinitely, I'm just going to put this topic right on the front page. Please leave your comments here if you are in need of a beta reader or would like to offer your services as one.

Thanks a bunch!

All Is Well
I really appreciate the support regarding the plagiarism issue and I wanted to let you guys know that it's all resolved now.

That being said, I hope everyone who celebrates has a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow! And for the rest of you who may not, I hope you have a lovely weekend!
Adora on Nov 22 2006 12:45 pm
Several of you contacted me last week to notify me that an author on had directly stolen large portions of my story and was trying to pass them off as her own. At the time, I didn't want to make a big issue out of it and I tried to work with her to correct the problem.

She had initially removed my parts from her story but I received another e-mail today and came to the realization that she's doing it all over again. The story is awful and it's extremely embarrassing to have my quotes in there alongside hers. That's not even mentioning the fact that it's incredibly wrong to steal from other authors anyway.

The stories are not my best work and have actually been up here for a couple of years. I've been intending to redo them but I just haven't had time yet. Now I'm considering taking them down completely because of this.

The author won't seem to listen to me but if you want to leave her some feedback on my behalf, here is the address to the story:

My parts are little further down in that chapter but you should be able to recognize them, as the writing style is completely different.

Thanks and I hope this never happens to any of you. It feels like such a violation to have somebody rip off your work this way.

ETA: Evidently the author is actually plagiarizing someone on this site who has plagiarized me. This grows even more complicated but I do have to say that plagiarism will not be allowed on the site under any circumstances. If you see any in the future, please report it to me immediately.

I'm sure that a lot of you guys are pretty tired of the downtime by now. The good news is that it's over and all reviews and previous information have been restored just as they were before. You are now free to review and post stories to your heart's content without having to worry about losing any data.

Now I'm going to explain why this took so long and why we had so many errors. If you post on this site, you need to read the following or you may risk your account being deleted for violating a new rule we have here.

I don't mean to be a jerk about this but I have spent the last week struggling and pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to fix the reviews database and I came to realize that the bugs happened because some of the members have been abusing the system.

I spent quite a few hours combing through over 7000 reviews trying to fix these problems. What I am referring to specifically is people that feel the need to add 40 exclamation points at the end of their words. What I'm talking about is members who press down keys and hold them, making words that are a paragraph long. For example, the word "yay" has three letters. There's absolutely no logical reason why you need to put 20 a's in the middle of it.

I understand that people get excited when they read a good story but please, type out your words NORMALLY instead of making them into an endless string of repetitive letters? The database simply can't process unnaturally long strings of information like that and besides, it's rather rude anyway.

We have a new rule here and that is if I see anyone typing things with any more than THREE of the same letter, number or punctuation in a row, I will either give them a warning or I will DELETE THEIR ACCOUNT. I apologize if this seems harsh but I am simply not going to go through the ordeal of trying to fix things that shouldn't be broken this way. The site would've been back up and fine a week ago if it hadn't been for this problem.

I want you guys to express yourselves openly here but please lay off the sticky fingers, okay? The rest of the members shouldn't have to suffer through a broken site over such a minor issue.

Another Update
I have been working on morning, trying to repair the problem with the reviews. Unfortunately, I had to revert to the backup from yesterday so if you have posted since then, that's where the stories went. I'm sorry about that but I was being rushed to put the site back up and I didn't have the time to iron out all of the kinks.

I honestly don't know what is going on with the reviews. I'm trying my best to fix things but nothing is working. I will keep trying different things but in the end, I don't know if we are going to be able to save them. I will keep you posted. I need you guys to just read for the next day or so and not leave reviews or post stories so that hopefully we can get this fixed.

And We're Back!
I apologize for the downtime but the good news is that we are officially relocated to our permanent server!

Switching servers for such a large web site is a very tedious process and even under the best of circumstances, there are sure to be a few glitches that need to be worked out.

We are having a couple of problems with the review system. Rest assured that all past data is safe but the review counts are not displaying properly yet. Additionally, you must go to the first chapter of any story to see the full list of reviews.

The other glitch is that the link that takes you back to the story after a review is left currently returns you to the main page. I am well aware of both of these issues and I'm currently working on them.

If you find any glitches or problems that are NOT listed above, please report them to me in the comments section of this news item. I have not reactivated my e-mail account yet.

I've been running this site for over two years now at my own time, effort and expense. I decided from the start that I was not going to put paid advertisements and other annoyances on the site. I don't like cluttering things up with that garbage but the consequence of that decision is that things do get more pricey around here. I will NEVER charge anyone to use this site as much as they wish to so it seems the best solution is to put up a button for optional donations via PayPal.

This is by no means a requirement but it is always appreciated. Even a very small donation, no more than the price of a cup of coffee, would do a lot to help out around here. Thank you very much for being great members, regardless of whether you choose to donate or not. I really do appreciate you guys!

Unfortunate News
I'm afraid the site crashed over the weekend and the last backup the host had available was from August 5th. That means that anything that has been posted over the last month, including chapters, reviews and any new accounts that have been created are gone. I am so sorry about this and please believe that I am just as upset as you guys are. Unfortunately, this was a level above me and out of my hands.

We are going to be moving to a new host to ensure that something like this never happens again. It will also mean no more downtime and a site that is generally a lot more stable.

I am going to have to take down the forums and reinstall them after we move but everything else should be fine. Again, I am so sorry.

All data you may have added to the site over the past month will need to be added again but I promise you that nothing like this will happen in the future. I feel terrible.

Flame of Anor Awards- Judging complete!
The judging for the Flame of Anor Awards is finished! Sorry it took so long but with so many wonderful stories, it took the judges quite awhile to read them all and carefully consider each one. I think we all owe them a big "thank you" for their time and effort and we particularly owe gratitude to Tinara for overseeing all of this for us this year!

Over the next couple of days, a public poll will be posted and you guys will be able to vote between two stories in each category to determine the final winner. This poll will run for two weeks, then the awards will be offically announced!

In the meantime, watch this space!

Moderators and Other News
Thanks so much to everyone who replied to the "help needed" post! To answer the biggest question, this job only requires as much time as you'd like to give it. Any help is appreciated, there's no limit either way.

For those who expressed interest, please send me an email at and I'll give you more details/add you on as moderator if you'd like. Its an easy job, really.

In other news, nominations for the Flame of Anor Awards are officially closed and our judges will be narrowing everything down over the next few weeks for the public voting. We received a ton of wonderful entries this year, thank you!

Also, a general thank you for being the best batch of members around. It truly is a pleasure to run this site and interact with you guys!

Help Needed
Hey guys,

As of right now, I run everything here at LotR Fanfiction myself and its getting to be a little too much. I'd really like to upgrade a few members to moderators who could help "share the load" as Samwise Gamgee would say. :)

Currently, I need moderators in two different categories:

1.) Site moderator: Your duties would include checking over stories, making sure they are in proper categories with the correct ratings and warnings and that they adhere to our submission rules. Due to the content of various stories, I can only accept site moderators who are over the age of 18.

2.) Forum moderator: Your responsibilities would include keeping threads on topic, deleting inappropriate posts and generally helping to maintain a mature and respectful environment over at our forums. Experience with forum moderation is preferred but not neccessary.

Anyone interested in helping out?

Two Things
First, nominations for the Flame of Anor Awards will be ending on April 15th. Please go here to nominate stories!

Also, I've opened a new topic at the forums that some of you might be interested in called the "Reviewer Buddy System." I had this idea for those people who receive less reviews than they would like to. Basically, you can make a post about your fanfiction and a person who reads/writes stories of a similiar nature can volunteer to become your review buddy. You would then make a point of keeping track of and leaving feedback on each other's work.

Please note that you must register seperately to use the forums, even if you're already a member of the site.
Adoralyna on Mar 29 2006 02:01 am
Everything's finished with the upgrade. I know some people were having trouble with the original layout so I made three new ones. There's a dark one, a light one and a very simple one for older browsers and slower connections. You can change the look and the feel of the site from the drop down menu on every page. I upgraded the forums as well and fixed all sorts of bugs.

Let me know how everything's working for you guys now!

Site Upgrade
I've just upgraded all of our software and scripts. We have a ton of new features so feel free to explore the new site! Let me know if you find any bugs. The transfer went smoothly but I haven't tested everything yet.

New features include:

Option to stay logged in
Email notifications when your favorite stories update
Users now categorized as members, authors and/or beta readers
Challenges section
Top tens
Newest member feature
Much, much more!

I'll be tweaking everything later today and restoring links to places such as the forums, affiliates and the Flame of Anor Awards page. For now, I'm off to get some much needed sleep!

Flame of Anor Awards Nominations OPEN!
I'm really sorry about the downtime, guys but technical difficulties are sometimes unavoidable. We're back now though and even better, nominations are officially open for the Flame of Anor Awards!

This year, you'll be able to nominate all stories here at our Livejournal community. You don't need a Livejournal account to participate but please read the rules carefully before nominating stories. All entries with incomplete or missing information will be disqualified.

Hurry and get yours in!
Adoralyna on Mar 18 2006 10:01 pm
Awards Delayed
I'm afraid that the Flame of Anor Awards nominations will have to be delayed until we find enough judges for all of the categories. I am updating the rules to state that you can become a judge if your story is nominated, as long as you are judging a different category.

The good news is that our forums are finally back up! Please note that you'll have to register seperately to post there.

If you are interested in judging for the Flame of Anor Awards, please post in the forums under the appropriate topic and let me know!

Second Annual Flame of Anor Awards
Things have been pretty hectic for me lately so I apologize that I'm a little late with this. Here is how we are going to do the awards this year:

First, I need two judges for each category. If you are interested, I ask that you have fair to good knowledge of Tolkien-verse and that you have an understanding of proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and formatting. Also its important to note that once you are a judge, your stories cannot be nominated for the awards.

In order to make the process fair and impartial, the nominations will go through two levels as they are narrowed down for voting. The first judge in a category will choose four stories, then the second judge will read and choose the two from those that she thinks are best. Those two stories will be the ones that all site members will be able to vote on.

We will have nine categories this year:

Best Book-verse

Best Movie-verse

Best Drama/Angst

Best Humor/Parody

Best Friendship

Best Short Story/One Shot

Best Original Character

Best Romance

Best Slash Romance

If you wish to become a judge, please e-mail me at and let me know which categories you would be willing to read for. Being a judge does require some level of dedication and quite a bit of reading, so I ask that if you volunteer that you have sufficient time and effort to devote to it.

I will be re-opening the forums this weekend with a special section for our judges to work together as the awards progress and nominations will be opened this Saturday for all site members. At that time, I'll go over the rules for submissions.
Adoralyna on Dec 29 2005 10:25 pm
We've been having a few problems with usernames and story summaries as of late. As far as usernames, please do not create accounts with more than 10 letters in a single word. This causes problems with the layout when you upload new stories.

Summaries: Please do not use all caps, bold or italics in your summaries or story titles. Please use proper spelling, capitalization and punctuation as well.

Though I try to edit any titles and summaries that violate these guidelines, I am a very busy person and don't always have the time to do this myself. Please save me some time and try to keep these things in mind.

Also, I'm thinking of removing all of our old skins and just keeping the new green/black layout. Are there any objections to this?

Thanks a bunch guys!
